Slow down and speak up. I’m trying just that, as I am always repeating myself. No understands me. A too-brief list of things I’ve said and how it was interpreted:

  • Said: You old, you don’t go out anymore.
    Heard: Yoko hano anymore?
  • Said: What about Game of Thrones?
    Heard: You want eggplant?
  • Said: They’re a bunch of big babies.
    Heard: Who has rabies?
  • Said: I need sesame oil.
    Heard: Satsumas?

Vibe: chic, artsy (upstairs gallery), city oasis (beautiful courtyard)
Fancy Cocktails: Catching Flights {Banknote blended scotch, fruitlab giner liquer, cardamom powder, angostura}, For the Love of Hops {Casoni apertivo, Montenaro Bianco vermouth, house made tops tincture, amara mescal}
Food Favorites: clams, orecchiette
Address: 3835 Tulane Ave.

Monday Meetings with Elaine Quijano

October 24, 2016

elaine-quijano-monday-meetings

Gina Rodriguez from Jane the Virgin started Movement Mondays on her Instagram to garner support for working Latino actors. She points out that studios feel more confident in hiring Latino actors for high-profile roles if the numbers back it up. TV shows and movies with Latino actors need to pull in higher ratings and more revenue.

This approach is the same for all minorities and extends beyond the acting community—into all aspects of creative professions. Inspired by Gina, I am starting the series Monday Meetings to highlight Asian movers, shakers, and makers. We should be seeing them and hearing from them more often—not just sporadically.

Meet Elaine Quijano. On October 4, she became the first Asian-American to moderate a national debate—and the youngest since 1988. She covered politics at CNN for 10 years before joining CBS in 2010. That same year her team won an Alfred I. duPont Award for excellence in broadcast journalism. As a second-generation immigrant, she lends a strong voice and presents a strong case for diversity in a monotonous media landscape.

Watch / Read / Listen (No. 8)

October 18, 2016

watch-read-listen-no-8

Watch:

  1. Dear White People. Important and refreshing.
  2. “The O’Reilly Factor” Gets Racist in Chinatown. #ThisIs2016.

Read:

  1. Sweetbitter by Stephanie Danler. To be 22 again. Starting fresh in NYC, Tess lands a serving job at a famous NYC restaurant, refines her palate, and falls in love. Danler precisely portrays that person—the broody and mysterious type who we all desired too deeply. The one who made us feel exhilarated for one moment and then empty the next. I loved the storytelling but wish the plot developed more before it ended.
  2. Meditation not Detention. A brilliant concept of allowing kids to release their inner turmoil instead of being punished for it.

Listen:

  1. Jagwar Ma. Electronic pop-rock with an old-school vibe. The 60s have been revived with “Come Save Me.”

The post title is attributed to J.R.R. Tolkien when he describes the phrase cellar door, (which is the name of this restaurant) as the most beautiful-sounding combination of words. In grad school, we had an assignment to list our favorite words. Some of my favorites include:

  • percolate
  • rendezvous
  • besot
  • brilliant
  • caveat
  • inoculate
  • sporadically
  • albeit

Vibe: can’t-tell-it’s-a-former-brothel, charming, old money
Cocktail: Green Light District | gin, fresh lime, basil, cucumber, soda
Happy Hour: Mon.-Fri. 4-7 p.m., $6 classic cocktails, burger + brew $12, select apps $5-$6
Food Favorites: brussel sprouts, octopus
Address: 916 Lafayette St.

Meet Alan Yang, a writer and producer for comedic favorites such as “South Park” and “Parks and Recreation.” When he accepted his Emmy award for “Master of None,” he advocated for an increase of Asian Americans in Hollywood:

There’s 17 million Asian Americans in this country, and 17 million Italian Americans. They have “The Godfather,” “Goodfellas,” “Rocky,” and “The Sopranos.” We’ve got Long Duk Dong. So we have a long way to go. But I know we can get there, I believe in us, it’s just gonna take a lot of hard work. Asian parents out there, if you can do me a favor: Just a couple of you, get your kids cameras instead of violins, we’ll all be good.

Tête-à-Tête (No. 7)

October 8, 2016

I don’t think we’re as amazing as our parents are … I’m not going to have any struggles to tell my kids about. What’s my story going to be like? ‘Ah son, once, when I was flying from New York to L.A., my iPad died.’

—Aziz Ansari

Watch / Read / Listen (No. 7)

October 4, 2016

pop-culture-no-7
Watch:

  1. The Kingdom of Dreams and Madness. Studio Ghibli (the maker of “Spirited Away”) reveals the intricate and philosophical process of creating an animated movie. Great quotes after great quotes.
  2. The Fundamentals of Caring. I was pleasantly surprised since I knew nothing about this movie. Craig Roberts is an exquisite actor, Paul Rudd is so lovable, and Selena Gomez shines in this role. The movie is based on a book by Jonathan Evison. I will report back on movie vs book.

Read:

  1. The Cooper Review. Witty and engaging comics of that 9-5 and life, in general, by Sarah Cooper.
  2. An argument for temporary marriages. We’d all be happier with less pressure to live happily ever after.

Listen:

  1. The Belle Game. Soulful pop that would work as background music to get you in the zone. Reminds me of Tennis and Sleigh Bells.
